The Faecal PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) Test is a fast and reliable way to identify if an infection is causing acute gastrointestinal symptoms. The test covers the most common causes of infectious diarrhoea caused by bacteria and parasites in NZ.

Preparation
A container will need to be collected from a collection centre to provide sample in. Samples cannot be collected at the collection centre.
The minimum amount required is approximately 1g (size of a walnut), no more than a half full container.

Faecal PCR
Detects bacterial or viral DNA in stool.
Common reasons for testing
- Ongoing or severe diarrhea – Helps find out if a bacterial, or parasitic infection is causing your symptoms.
- Stomach pain and cramping – Identifies whether an infection is affecting your gut health.
- Food poisoning symptoms – Detects harmful germs that may have come from contaminated food.
- Unexplained weight loss or digestive problems – Checks for infections that might be affecting how well your body absorbs nutrients.
- Recent travel to high-risk areas – Screens for travel-related stomach bugs, which are common after visiting certain countries.
