Plasma metanephrines
Metanephrines are byproducts of adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine), hormones produced by the adrenal glands. The Plasma Metanephrines Test measures these substances in the blood to provide insights into adrenal gland activity and help assess whether the body is producing too much of these stress-related hormones. This test is often used when investigating high blood pressure, frequent headaches, rapid heartbeat, sweating, or other symptoms that may be linked to excessive adrenaline production. It is also helpful in detecting pheochromocytomas—rare tumors of the adrenal glands that can cause hormone imbalances.

What's measured in this test
Metanephrines Blood
Detects hormone-producing tumors.
Common reasons for testing
- Unexplained high blood pressure – Evaluates if excess adrenaline production may be contributing to resistant or sudden-onset hypertension.
- Frequent headaches, rapid heartbeat, or excessive sweating – Helps assess symptoms linked to adrenal hormone overproduction.
- Screening for pheochromocytoma – Aids in detecting rare adrenal tumours that produce excess stress hormones.
- Monitoring adrenal gland function – Supports ongoing assessment in individuals with adrenal conditions or genetic risk factors.
- Unexplained anxiety or panic-like symptoms – Helps determine if hormonal imbalances may be contributing to sudden anxiety episodes.
