Understanding thyroid blood testing in New Zealand
The thyroid plays an important role in regulating metabolism, energy production, temperature control, and hormone balance throughout the body.

Understanding thyroid function
The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck. It produces hormones that help regulate how the body uses energy, alongside supporting heart rate, digestion, body temperature, and normal metabolic function.
Because thyroid hormones affect multiple systems throughout the body, changes in thyroid function can sometimes contribute to a wide range of non-specific symptoms.

What does a thyroid blood test measure?
A thyroid blood test typically measures:
- TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) – helps regulate thyroid hormone production
- Free T4 (Thyroxine) – the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland
- Free T3 (Triiodothyronine) – the active thyroid hormone involved in metabolism and energy regulation
These markers are often interpreted together to provide a broader picture of thyroid function.
Why are TSH, Free T4 and Free T3 measured together?
TSH is commonly used as an initial screening marker for thyroid function. However, additional thyroid hormones such as Free T4 and Free T3 may provide further context depending on the clinical situation.
Assessing these markers together may help provide more information about how the thyroid gland is functioning and whether additional medical follow-up may be appropriate.

- pregnancy status
- medical history
- previous thyroid conditions
Understanding thyroid test results
Thyroid test results should be interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional in the context of your symptoms, medical history, medications, and other clinical information. An abnormal result does not always indicate a thyroid disorder on its own.
Examples may include:
- Elevated TSH with low Free T4 may be associated with hypothyroidism
- Low TSH with elevated thyroid hormones may be associated with hyperthyroidism
- Borderline changes may require repeat testing or ongoing monitoring
